Bambi in my backyard.

This evening this little fawn was grazing in my backyard. We are on five acres and we are home to a family of deer. A mom, and a set of twins. They live in our woods and the little ones graze on our grass. The problem is the mom and I think her sister eat all my beloved blue hydrangea which I planted close to the house. It took them a while to find it this year but now it is all eaten.

It is surprising they come so close to the house. Most of my plantings are in the back of the house because that is where our big windows are. And that is where our dogs spend there time. You would think the deer would not want to be around the dogs.

The truth is, the deer are smarter than you think. We have electric dog fencing for the dogs so they have their boundaries and the the deer know exactly where those lines are. The deer know when we keep the dogs in, ( in the evenings, etc.). So they munch, munch away happily when the dogs are not out.

The funny thing is the deer graze happily next to the cat. Our cat Jiji sits on the stone wall next to them hunting mice and the deer are right next to him content as can be.

Yeah, it's wild kingdom sometimes here in Old Lyme. I actually love to watch the interaction of the wild animals with the domesticated ones. It's very interesting stuff.

You can see here how tiny this little fawn is compared to the grass plant behind.
